Howdy! About a month ago, we dove into the world of Marc Mulero’s upcoming book which is no longer “upcoming.” The Darkest Dawn, Rings of War: Book 1 released earlier this week. Now that it’s out, read on to find out what Tellest thought about it:
Author Marc Mulero wears his passion for fantasy on his sleeve, whether its with post-apocalyptic fare, or the kind of fantasy that fans love to lose themselves in for weeks and months. In Mulero’s epic fantasy, The Darkest Dawn, Rings of War: Book 1, a careful balance exists between worldbuilding, character development and an interesting notion of self-identity, as well as the unveiling of mysteries that move readers from one intriguing event to the next. The Darkest Dawn sets a lot in motion, with a realm ripe for exploration—and the author gives readers plenty of room to do so within the pages of this first massive volume.
Eres is a Dawn. A sexless barren. A freak. And because of it, he’s spent most of his short life stuck in a shack in the middle of nowhere, hiding amidst the forest for no one to find. Society would strike him from existence if they could, and it’s for this reason that they can never know.
Now, all there is to do is to wait, to dream that one day maybe he could become a powerful Skrol like his father before him. He wants nothing more than to wield an esper – a crafted ring that possesses an eye into another world – and fight against the infamous assassin, Seren Night, who seeks to reveal the secret that the Skrols have been tasked to protect for thousands of years.
But as time drifts by, all of these dreams slowly fade away with it.
Until one day, his father finally returns from his endless travels bearing the greatest gift of all: to disguise Eres’ true identity so he can attend the local academy, Kor Vinsánce, and find his purpose in all of this.
It’s here, within the overcast shadow of his legendary father, where his journey begins.
This incredible epic fantasy has the benefit of having a zealous and eager author at its helm. Heralding the start of a no-doubt legendary series, the tome could just as easily stand on its own. Some storytellers would have to complete an entire trilogy to develop the kind of fulfilling plotlines and surprises that Mulero sets in place. The characters within the pages of this first volume perform a great deal of heavy lifting, and present an interesting tapestry of a world filled with curiosities, promise and lived-in stories that have more to tell.
