Art: Orc Concept Pieces

What we’ve seen so far, regarding art, has been very practical.  We’ve seen characters that readers have been introduced to, seen a map of the experienced lands of Tellest, and seen the covers for the stories that I’ve released thus far.

Paul Davies is a jack of all trades, and one of the things he does very well is concept art.  I knew that I wanted someone who was going to be able to tackle something of that nature early on, since Tellest is pretty unique in the way that it presents certain tried and true archetypes.  One such fantasy mainstay is the orc.  Paul and I collaborated on a way to make the classic race seem more human and noble in appearance.  We worked at giving the typically evil characters a more compassionate feeling.  Here’s what we came up with:

Tellest_Orc_HeadSketches

We started with some facial features. These guys look rugged, but there’s a sort of warmness to them that isn’t usually present in most depictions of them.

Tellest_Orc_FullBody

These sketches show that even though they seem more human in their countenance, they still retain that primal, almost savage heritage.

Tellest_Orc_Final_Sketch1

Paul and I then went to work on a final sketch that we could turn into a painting. This is the runner up.

In a couple weeks, we’ll look back to the orcs, and show you exactly what we picked as far as a final piece goes.  Paul did an excellent job, and I can’t wait to show you what we left off with!
