Bret’s last mission was considered a success despite heavy losses. He left ship command to become a college professor shortly after. Clay uses Bret’s friendship with the missing captain to persuade him to accept a 30-day deployment.

An unknown intruder attacks unmanned outposts and removes their contents. Unlike mercenaries and raiders, these adversaries have advanced ships. After defending a Mekal ship, their main competitor, Bret, forges a temporary truce with a long-term adversary.

The intruder, the Carina cruiser Cailin, has been stranded in their star system for two years. A stellar event sent them there during their subnet exit. The Carina portal is currently unavailable, and they cannot determine their planet’s fate. Desperate, they have resorted to attacking remote outposts to seize military supplies. To make amends for the harm and unintended casualties, they offer Candal and Mekal a revelation.

Charles’s story is wonderfully compelling because it approaches first contact not simply as an encounter with the unknown, but as a moment capable of changing everything.  He builds his adventure around competing interests and reluctant cooperation, giving the characters plenty of room to demonstrate courage and ingenuity, as well as the willingness to set old rivalries aside when circumstances demand it.  This new tale is perfect for readers who enjoy classic space opera, military science fiction, alien encounters, political intrigue, and richly imagined galactic settings.  Best of all, you can discover this latest adventure for free from September 7 through September 9.
