Hey there game fans!  A while back we showed off some of monsters from Merge Dungeon, and now we’re ready to dive even further into the unknown.  We’re spoiling some of one of the later chambers, so if you don’t want to see these monsters, turn back now.  We’ve got 12 monsters to show off though, and they’re ready to rise from their graves to stave off some hardy adventurers.  Let’s dive right in.

When it comes to the undead, we start with the basics.  As of the time of this writing (which should be well after the game releases, fingers crossed), we were still considering calling the undead chamber the “hero-deboning chamber” but I’m not sure how much that will stick.  We wanted to make sure that the undead in our game weren’t too scary.  It is a casual game, after all, and we wanted just about anyone to be able to play it.

The next skeleton up is armed, making him a bit more of a problem for would-be adventurers.  Still, with how long he’s been in the ground, there’s a good chance those weapons won’t amount to much!

Our highest level skeleton has some snazzy armor and dual wields.  While those bones might be brittle, the weapons certainly aren’t, so anyone daring to face off against the skeleton warrior better bring their A game!

After brush past the skeletons, we move on to our slightly fleshier monsters.  This zombie looks like he needs a vacation.  Since he’s in the Living Dungeon (or at least getting shipped off to it), there’s no hope for that.  His only hope is evolving into something stronger.

Ghouls are a little more eager to cause some damage, and a little less squishy to boot.  This guy’s fangs and claws are almost just as bad as those skeleton weapons we saw earlier!

The scariest of our lower tier “zombies” is the ghast.  Magic has kept him fierce and hungry, and unsuspecting heroes are in for a rude awakening when this guy leaps out of the shadows.

We wanted to shake things up from the slime chamber, so the undead chamber doesn’t constrict itself to just sets of three monsters.  The “zombies” end up going for a few more monsters.  This revenant has a little more sentience than the previous baddies.

Wights are like revenants but with a bit more meat on their bones, so to speak.  They’re smart enough to armor up and bring powerful weapons to bear against their enemies.

The abomination might seem like  step back, since it doesn’t have any equipment, but this abyssal amalgamation comes stocked to the brim with potent magic.

After zombies, we move on to mummies.  These ancient undead are a bit more mystical, and provide a good amount of monster essence to the dungeon master.

A step up from the regular mummy, royal mummies are guardians of ancient kings and queens.  They were buried with more finery and weapons, which make them worthy adversaries.

The final monster we’re showing off in the first set of undead monsters is the pharaoh mummy.  He (or she) brings powerful magic to the table, which can be used against adventurers, or to bring plentiful monster essence to the dungeon.

This is a nice look at the 12 monsters we’ve shown off so far.  Come back here in another three weeks when we show off the rest of the undead scourge!

Origination

For necromancers, death knights can be no better champion.  Unfortunately, death knights cannot be conjured from nothingness.  Only a strong, able fallen hero can be raised as a death knight.

Some of these fallen heroes are not brought back to life by the dark powers of necromancy, but rather as the result of a forged oath that they made in life.  They are bound to a task, and their passion for seeing that task to its completion can be powerful enough to keep them from a proper afterlife.

Physical Appearance

Death knights come in all manner of race and gender.  It is thought that they became slightly more commonplace during the return of the humans, and thus that race is the one that is mostly associated with them.

Typically, death knights are quite pale, but they don’t look much different than they did in life unless they were brought back through necromancy long after they perished.  In dire circumstances, a necromancer will bring back his champion in an almost fully decomposed state.  If they are brought back to life under their own oath, or by a lucky necromancer though, it is almost as if they were never fully gripped by the afterlife at all.  In those situations, it is said that the death knight’s hair and fingernails will even continue to grow.

Clothing and Adornment

Because of their mostly unmanaged thoughts, death knights will usually wear what they perished in.  If they have some level of cognitive reasoning, they have been known to change their attire at their own discretion.

General Personality

Temperament and Behavior

Death knights are typically unfeeling.  They’re bound to a task, which can be as simple as killing in the name of a necromancer, or protecting a city from destruction.

A death knight that fails in its endeavors can become lost, which may result in one of several consequences.  It can end their undead plight, or it can free their mind, allowing them to continue on unabated.  At that point, it is almost as though they are given a second chance at life.

Death

Because death knights have already been separated from their life, it can be difficult to destroy them.  Usually, removing the head is a sure way to finish the job.

Origination

Dullahans are, perhaps, some of the most terrifying undead creatures there are.  It is said that just a look from their disembodied head can stop your heart from beating.

If their death was particularly grisly, dullahans can rise from their graves on their own.  However, they are usually used as fodder for necromancers.  They make decent cavalry since they are typically associated with horses, which may have died with them.

Physical Appearance

Unless a dullahan has managed to find their own skull, they will travel the roads as a headless.  They almost always ride upon a black steed, though none can truly be sure if the horse is black because of its death, or if it always had the midnight coat.

The riders typically have a decayed and moldy pall to their flesh.  The skin on the face, if ever found, is especially unsettling.

Some people say that even though they have no heads, dullahans have ethereal, haunting eyes where their sockets would have been, relative to their necks.

Clothing and Adornment

Unlike ghouls and skeletons and death knights, dullahans are adorned by a shroud of darkness made manifest.  This cloak will cover their grisly features until they are too close to their prey for them to escape.

General Personality

Temperament and Behavior

Dullahans will fight until destroyed.  They take great relish in killing those they are commanded to kill.  If they are murdered in a way most foul, when they rise, they will begin hunting those that killed them.  Unfortunately, after they have killed their intended targets, they do not feel compelled to stop.  They will then randomly assign their wrath to any who they happen upon.

Death

Because dullahans are already headless, severing their heads is impossible.  However, destroying their heads is rumored to stop them, as well as pouring gold or lead onto their neck.  Supposedly, delivering a golden blade into their spine is enough to stop them for good as well.

Dullahans that fight for a necromancer are more disposable.  Because magic is ultimately holding them together, a certain level of force can be enough to sever their connection to the world of the living.
