There are some genres that just seem to overflow with poetry.  I love fantasy because more often than not, it just feels like Shakespeare has left little flourishes about the various worlds.  A certain rhyme here, a cadence there, and it all comes together to give it just a tinge of whimsy that you might not see in our ordinary lives.

J. J. Adams has a story for you that just about bleeds poetry, from every nook and cranny.  Pansflorawood is filled to the brim with wonderful prose, dialog that just has to be read with a sing-songy voice, and enough character to keep you charmed throughout.  It’s a tale that will enthrall anyone who still has an active imagination, and wants to be transported to another world.

All come one, one come all, to the Autumn Pumpkin Ball on the Equinox of Fall!

When a Elven wedding is interrupted by a villainous vampire bat and two mischievous magpies, feathers get ruffled for The Birds of Paradise Performing Arts Troupe!

“PANSFLORAWOOD” is modern day Shakespeare with an unusual story mixed with unique poetry. A one of a kind book!

Pansflorawood is a book that would definitely appeal to children, but it also will steal away the hearts of many adults who still embrace their inner child.  If you’re interested in Adams’ book, check it out on Amazon!  And don’t forget, there are excerpts from the book at the author’s site.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone.  I’m anxiously waiting for my lovely wife to wake up so that we can open gifts (no doubt… I schedule these things early).  I was a little preemptive this year.  I’m very bad at keeping secrets, especially from her, so Rhianna has had the privilege of opening nearly everything I got her already.

But my do I have a gift for you!  I happened upon a new series by author D. Dalton that is right in my wheelhouse.  If you’re a fan of Tellest, there’s a huge chance you’ll love All Things Impossible, a wonderful fantasy universe.  Dalton is a best-selling author who I’m already blown away by, and I’ve only just learned about her.

The first book in the series, Crown of the Realm, is a great entry point. It’ll introduce you to characters that are flawed in ways that are endearing, and before you know it, you’re completely caught up in their adventures.

crown_of_the_realm_edited_text

In this first volume of the All Things Impossible series, an ancient evil has returned. An ancient war has resumed. And for the first time in elven history, the Crown of the Realm has been stolen.

But young Derora Saxen knows nothing of such things. When she sets out from her village with her best friend Kelin, she knows only that she wants to be a warrior.

She does not know the immortal chemmen have escaped the realm of darkness to which they had been banished for millennia. She does not know chemmen armies are already exacting revenge on their hated enemies, the elves, or that chemmen assassins have already killed the elven king and queen.

And she does not know that by helping a tranger, she will be drawn into a struggle that began long before she was born, and take the first steps on her path to destiny. In the fires of an ancient war, a new hero will be forged…

Dalton will no doubt impress you with her books, but it’s the breadth of her work that is truly inspiring.  There are already six All Things Impossible books that have been released, with the seventh on the horizon.  They’re being released in other languages, and a manga is even on the way in February (seriously, I’m incredibly jealous of this author… it’s everything I want to do with Tellest).  You can pick up the first book on Amazon, but the books are free—in PDF form—on the All Things Impossible website!  Sweet Christmas!  It doesn’t get any better than that.  Wishing the best to D. Dalton, an incredibly talented, benevolent author who has a lot to offer!

We’ve been talking a lot about mythology and legend, and most of it stems from the ancient world.  We don’t see too much of those these days (though Percy Jackson sure springs to mind).  What we do see a lot of, especially in urban fantasy, are more recent permutations of men, sometimes drawn on from religious or spiritual texts.  Of those, angels are always an entertaining lot to draw inspiration from.

While Iryna K. Combs’ Black Wings doesn’t come right out and call them angels, they’re apparent in her story.  The Anlights and the Varkins are day and night, angels and demons, and wars have been brewing between them for as long as anyone remembers.  With tinges of science fiction and elements of romance, Combs’ story can appeal to most anyone.

A new time. A new planet. A new world. New technologies. Two new humanoid species. A new war.

The two species separate, but in the removal, some of the best are left behind among the worst. Captured and held as slaves, they are treated cruelly for entertainment. Torture. Pain.

Annabel, endures a year of such cruelty, kept alive only by way of syringes which, while healing, cause a greater agony. She discovers a secret held by their leader, and decides to help her own kind by escaping–even if it means a final death, preferable to the life she has endured.

Her escape succeeds, and she joins her own kind at the other end of the planet. Among her new friends she meets many who help her adjust to their happier life. Will Annabel find romance? Or will another war break her down?

Combs delivers a story that swells with intrigue and delights with tension.  She’s had a stunningly interesting set of life experiences, and she’s adding storytelling to her wheelhouse.  What’s most interesting and inspiring is that English is not her first language, yet the writing is still masterfully crafted.

If Black Wings sounds like it would appeal to you, consider purchasing it from Amazon.  And if you want to learn more about the author, check out Combs on her personal website.

Fantasy is, by nature, a very fascinating genre.  You have all manner of opportunities to tell stories in such clever ways, and it never really feels like you lose that sense of wonder.  We’ve seen such brilliant variations on all kinds of myths and fairytales that sometimes it’s hard to be surprised.

Just the Way You Are, by Allison M. Lewis, has an interesting, beautiful twist.  It’s a story about personal empowerment, even in the face of hardships.  The author of this story has set out to show that disabilities are not a dead end, but a speed bump.  It all starts with a little bit of magic.  Just check out the author’s blurb for the story below.

JustTheWayYouAre_FrontCover

Misty Miles, the princess of a faraway land known as Starryton, is like any other woman of her station – except for her disability. She has spent the majority of her 21 years high in a tower so that this, and the wheelchair that accompanies it, will remain a secret. Her parents’ fear of the monarchy appearing weak as a result of Misty’s condition necessitates this course of action.  Their efforts to protect both Misty and the monarchy make her question her ability to do much of anything – forget about reigning over a kingdom. Like most princesses, Misty has a Prince Charming. Her love is Derrick Denison, prince of the neighboring kingdom of Mooncrest, who is a gifted dancer.  Misty is unable to see Derrick because not only is she stuck in an inescapable room, but there’s also the matter of the long, as of yet unresolved, feud between the two families. This conflict caused the once beloved kingdom of Starrycrest to break apart into two separate kingdoms.

The princess soon realizes that she must take matters into her own hands.  She goes to Trovella, a troll rumored to grant wishes for a price.  Misty’s wish takes her on an interesting journey. She not only stares down self-doubt while ensuring that her kingdom and the kingdom of her beloved prince do not pay the ultimate price, but also contends with the rage of feuding families. To make matters all the more complicated, the princess is also faced with the challenge of finding a little girl she encounters in the course of her journey, who also has a disability, a permanent family.

Just the Way You Are is a heart-filled tale of all the possibilities that we have.  In spite of the roadblocks that life sometimes seems to put in front of us, we’re capable of anything.  Lewis does a wonderful job of showing that, and adds a heaping spoonful of fantasy flavor to boot.  Check out Just the Way You Are on Amazon, or on Barnes and Noble.  And also, do yourself a favor and discover the author’s website.  It’s just as uplifting as her book!

It’s hard to get lightning to strike the same place twice as an aspiring author.  As a storyteller, there’s usually a strong urge to dump all of your creativity into the first story you’ve worked on, and you end up burnt out by the time you’re ready to tell the follow-up.  It takes a very good wordsmith and talespinner to bring together the threads that make a sequel pay the right amount of fan service while still feeling fresh for all audiences.

Murray Lee Eiland Jr. keeps plugging away at the Orfeo Saga, a literary universe that he’s obviously very keen on.  This historical fiction explodes off the page with every new scene.  If The Sword of Telemon tickled your fancy, the second book in the series, The Emperor of Babylon, will surely tickle you everywhere else.

Orfeo Book 2

The Emperor of Babylon has captured Zurga – a brilliant inventor – and is demanding to know how to control volcanic eruptions. He also desires iron weapons, a closely guarded Hittite secret. The emperor plans conquer all the lands surrounding the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. He has a vast spy network and is preparing a huge army. Orfeo and Clarice, both trained as wanderers, must use all of their skills to save their friend and teacher. They must also stop the Emperor who believes himself to be a deity. Can they stop a madman that could destroy the entire region?

Eiland Jr. is making waves in historical fantasy.  The Emperor of Babylon doesn’t just meet the bar set by its predecessor, it leaps over it effortlessly.  If you’re interested in picking up this second title in the saga, head over to the book’s Amazon page.  And of course, don’t forget that the third book in the series, Zurga’s Fire, is out as well!
