The last big character piece that our favorite “figurine” artist did for us was Kaos Kreegan back in August.  We’re in November now, though, and seeing as Michael is working on a story about Ippius now, it only seems fair that we look at one of its greatest heroes: Kevin Dactyls, otherwise known as the ranger, Steel Tip.

Once again, we’ve got a slightly beardy ranger firing out with his bow.  You can see here, though, that he’s using the Spectrum, the weapon he acquired in As Darkness Falls.  How?  That ain’t no normal arrow!

Here you can see the iconic green that the ranger is known for, and you can more definitively see the awesome magic arrow that is ready to be fired out.  I love all the details here, from the warped look to the bow, to the magic quiver, Woodchuck, slung over his shoulder.

Finally, we’ve added a colored background behind the ranger that makes him pop a little bit more.  There’s a beautiful smoky look to everything, and he just comes off looking badass.

There’s no better ally for Kaos than Steel Tip, and we’ve got some very interesting changes coming for his character in the near future (can someone say Retcon?), so keep your eyes peeled.

And what better way to celebrate where we’re going than to look at where we’ve been?  Today, we’re happy to show off the original Tellest hero; the guy that started it all: Kaos Kreegan.

I clearly have a soft spot in my heart for Kaos.  In our interview, I admitted that he’s kind of a straw man—he’s a morally white character who has values and a personality that I would personally aspire to.  Which is why I have to break him.

In this first draft picture, you can see that Hozure did us a solid and gave us the awesome flaming sword, Wildfire.  Maybe this is at the hind end of the trilogy where he made his debut.

We follow up with a beautiful color version of the piece.  Kaos means business here, and he’s ready to tackle whatever odds are before him.  One of the things that Hozure is excelling at is different textures.  You can see that by looking at the various components of Kaos’ outfit.

Finally, we get the piece with a background and a little under-piece that gives everything a little more presence.

We’re looking forward to showing off more of the heroes of the original trilogy throughout the year, but we’ve got a new hero that we’re showing off next week!  Stay tuned!

We still have a handful of awesome artwork to show you from our “figurine master,” but we’re focusing on a really special one today.  Since we’re currently doing our run of A Most Unusual Applicant, we thought this was especially fitting. We’re focusing on a character who was created outside of one of my books or stories. We’d like to give a special thanks to Aaron Canton, who created this awesome character.  Without further adieu, let’s see what Hozure did with Jaide Rivers:

One thing that I will say about these figurines is that their outfits are always one of the coolest things.  You can’t fully appreciate it, though, until you see it in full color.

Jadie always presents herself as ultimately very humble and reserved.  She doesn’t need to be seen as gaudy or ostentatious—instead she values what life presents to her.

And here you have the complete version, along with the expanded details.  I love the whole piece, from the dagger to the vines to her outfit.  Hozure did an awesome job with Jadie, and I’d like to again thank Aaron for providing us with such an incredible character to begin with!

We start off with a nice greyscale version of the character.

Hozure gave her the nice little skirt that she first encountered Kaos in.  She had playful sandals and an unassuming look that could cause real trouble for anyone who didn’t know just how powerful she was becoming.  She also has a half staff, which you don’t see too often.  In the book, she was written with a wand, but I think this actually takes the cake—I prefer Hozure’s interpretation.

After that, a dash of color clearly gives the character a warmth that she might not otherwise have.  She’s clearly one with nature—maybe a druid at first glance.

And here we are with our final cut.  Narallyndra definitely carries herself as a bit of a badass.  Again, it’s easy to dismiss her as just a pretty face, but she’s got powers that would really change your day for the worse if she wanted.  That’s the benefit of learning from a sorcerer like Wispus.

We last saw Zoe Hart in the style of John Becaro.  She had a distinctive look when compared to June Jenssen’s version of the character, but of course we’re always interested in other people’s take on the characters we create.

And so, today we give you Skence’s version, where you might see our second generation hero as a figurine.

This is the first time that we’ve seen Zoe with both of her sais. She still has her playful demeanor, but there’s something a little more threatening about the way she handles herself with twin weapons.

That smirk is definitely one of confidence.  Zoe comes from a family of heroes, so she has reason to believe she has what it takes.  First and foremost, her father is none other than the knight of virtue, Randall Hart.  Her adoptive uncle, Grant Scott, is another one of the fabled heroes.  And to round it all out, we also have her brother Garrett, who has his own courageous qualities.

Zoe featured prominently in As Darkness Falls, but we only saw her a little bit in The Enemy Within.  There’s word around the water cooler, however, that it certainly wasn’t the last time we’ve seen her!

It’s getting to be that time.  I think we’ve seen a lot of Tales of Tellest and Bindings of Fate characters, and it’s time to continue along to characters who have made a big splash in some of our other works.

We’ve seen Lyla Brenna a few times, but it’s Skence’s turn to really shine a light to her.  His distinct style is sure to make her appealing, and we can’t wait to show the warrior huntress to you in all her glory!

Lyla is a warrior from Saveon who was recruited by Tarson when her country was invaded.  She’s been used primarily as a spy, because her beauty can be somewhat disarming.

Every single one of our artists have done an awesome job and making her armor look incredibly attractive.  And Lyla herself is captured gorgeously in this colorized version of the piece.

In this piece, you get the full effect, and understand just how good Skence is at his job.  He did an awesome job with Alicia, and now he’s done a wonderful job with Lyla as well.

We’ll start you off with a black and white version of his first finished character.  Alicia Mane—who has been getting a lot of love from various artists over the years—really pops thanks to Skence’s new style.

It’s the colored version that really pops, though.  Everyone seems to really gravitate toward the fire aspects of Alicia.  I suppose it’s easier to really put to page fire when you’re doing art, and it’s probably more interesting than having a random splash of light hanging about without anything to use it on.

We’re really very impressed without how far Skence’s abilities have come, and this first piece that he got us was an incredible demonstration of what we were able to expect going forward.

Alicia starts us off down this new collaboration.  We hope you’re looking forward to the other ones in the weeks to come!

As is typically the case we the art we commission, we started off with some sketches of the character that would lead us to the final vision.

After that, Skence took us all the way to the end, showing us our angel-winged hero in an awesome light.  We also have a good look at his twin swords here.  Icarus is a force to be reckoned with, and Skence did a great job capturing that.

This is actually one of my favorite pieces for the elf hunter.  She looks stoic and powerful, but it still retains a lot of her femininity.  Very happy with how it turned out.

Today, we’ve got another piece for you from Skence.  This one will just be a quick post, because this was the initial piece that we did with the artist.  Think of it as kind of an audition.  In this case, Skence didn’t keep the sketches that he was working on, so we’ve just got the final piece.  That said, it was an awesome piece, and it led to some other great “figurines” going forward.11
